A blog is a simple, cost-effective way to create a professional
online presence.
A blog allows you to quickly and easily create a place on the web where people can find you, learn about you, and interact with you. You don’t need an IT staff or a degree in computer science to do it; if you can send an email, you can create a blog. Whether you want to create an online presence for fun or business or both, a blog is the most effective way to do it.
A blog creates a conversation between you and the people who
matter to you.
A blog allows you to have an ongoing conversation about topics that are important to you. If you’re a wine lover, you might want to engage with other oenophiles. If you’re an artist, you might want to create a dialogue with other people in the arts community. Independent professionals might want to exchange ideas on their area of expertise. No matter what your purpose, a blog allows you to start the conversation and keep it going.
A blog is a tremendous way to boost your search engine rankings.
A blog is a great way to be discovered. Every time you create a post, your content are being crawled by crawlers and feeds it to a search engine; the more often you post, the higher your search engine ranking will be, and the more likely it will be that people will discover your blog. If you want more credibility, more customers, or a larger audience, creating a blog is an ideal way to make it happen.
A blog allows you to take control of what you publish.
A blog have an intuitive interface that makes it easy to publish all kinds of content. You don’t have to possess any special technical knowledge, or plan for months or be constrained by print deadlines — publish as much as you want, any time you want. You’re in control.
A blog allows you to develop a position of thought leadership.
A blog is a content platform that allows you to fashion a consistent message over time to demonstrate thought leadership in a particular field. This is tremendously valuable for independent professionals and businesses that are focusing on a particular market. A blog sends an implicit message of transparency and accountability, and builds trust in customers, partners, and potential clients.
A blog is a valuable business tool for collecting customer feedback.
Blogs are increasingly important for businesses, because they create a forum in which customers can offer feedback, interact with each other, and obtain access to timely information. Consistent blog posts can be an indispensable tool for public relations, and can foster loyalty in clients, media and partners alike.
A blog creates a historical record of your content.
Whether you’re blogging for business or blogging about something you’re passionate about, your posts form a record that will become increasingly valuable over time. Business bloggers can use blog archives as a knowledge base to help new employees get up to speed. Independent professionals can point potential clients to past posts. Individual bloggers can refer back to posts as if they were journal entries. Best of all, blog archives are searchable, downloadable, and safely stored in your blogs data centers.
And the Best of all These Good Reasons is that.
There's a blogging platform that can give and provide you all these good reasons. The World's premier blogging service, hosting the leading blogs and small business websites and powering the most influential voices on the social web.

Good reasons. Well done.
When I saw the title I was meaning to come look to see if you mention using a blog almost like a diary, but your mentioning of using it for historical records covers that :)
I also think a blog is a good place to simply and easily display writing, for those that have a passion for writing.
I also see a blog as an information provider, so in a way, it's a method one can use to help people.

There's something that I want to add. A blog keeps you in touch with your customers. If you constantly update your customers, they'll have this mindset of "Ohh, they're releasing updates today." Through information dissemination, you will be able to satisfy and inform your customers.
